Guide

How to get your export, right from the start.

Ordering it takes a minute, but a single missed box costs you the times and the places across the whole archive. Read this first.

You can do all of this from your phone. You do not need a computer. If you have a lot saved, a computer can feel calmer while the files are uploading, but that is a convenience and not a requirement.

Tick both of these

In the list called Select data to include.

  • Export your Memoriesyour snaps as real filesThe pictures and videos themselves. Without it you get no Memories at all, only text files about them.
  • Export JSON Filesthe dates and the placesIt says for data portability purposes and looks optional. It is not. This is where the original date with the time of day and the GPS position sits.

Miss Export JSON Files and you get the pictures but almost no information about them: the date down to the day, no time and no place. It cannot be repaired afterwards, you have to order a new export.

What do I do with the other options?

We read only what concerns your Memories, so you can leave the rest switched off. If you want them for your own sake they get in the way of nothing, the export just gets bigger.

Four steps

  1. STEP 01

    Open Snapchat's data settings

In the app: settings, privacy and data settings, request your data. Snapchat moves the menus around now and then, so look for wording around My Data rather than an exact path.

  2. STEP 02

Move what you want out of My Eyes Only

Anything left in the password-protected space normally does not come along in the export. Move it back into your ordinary Memories first, or you will have to order a new export.

  3. STEP 03

    Tick both boxes above

This is the step people miss, and the only one that cannot be repaired afterwards.

  4. STEP 04

Wait for the email and download every part

Snapchat emails you a download link when the export is ready. It often takes a few hours, sometimes longer for large archives, and the link expires. Large archives come in several files and they all belong together.

What it looks like when the export is ready

The parts hold different things. One of them is small and holds the list of your Memories. The big ones hold the pictures and films themselves. Upload only the small one and you get an empty archive: everything looks right, but there are no pictures in it.

Rule of thumb: a thousand Memories make an export of several gigabytes. If everything you downloaded is only a few tens of megabytes, the picture parts are missing, and then it is worth looking in the email from Snapchat again before you upload.

Example · every part is needed

Put all the parts in at once. The files can be selected together, exactly as they are. If you have already unpacked the export and ended up with several folders, such as memories 1 and memories 2, select them all and drag them in at the same time. That works from a computer, and the selections are added together.

Leave the screen on while the upload runs. If the phone locks halfway through it can lose its grip on the files, and then they arrive empty. We tell you straight away if that happens, but it is easier to avoid.

Can you do it yourself?

Yes. There is no secret in what we do, and it is worth knowing what it involves before you decide.

In the export the files are called things like 2025-08-23_4F2A81C6-…-main.jpg. The day is in the name, but not the time and not the place, and inside the file there is no such information at all. The times and the places sit in a file of their own, memories_history.json, and it does not say which picture or video each entry belongs to. On a real archive we measured, the field for the download link was empty in all 401 entries. What is left is pairing them up day by day, and if you have twelve snaps on the same Saturday, nothing tells you which of that day's twelve times belongs to which picture. Taking them in order was right in 39 per cent of cases on an archive of 1,182 files, which is another way of saying that it comes out wrong.

Then there is the text and the stickers. Whatever you wrote or stuck on a snap sits as a separate see-through picture next to the original. If it is not put back, the memory does not look the way you remember it.

What we do is read the two sources together, write the date and the place back as ordinary EXIF data, put the text and the stickers back, and give every file a name that starts with the date. Where the match is not certain we set no time and no place at all rather than guess, and the summary afterwards says how many Memories got what. You do not have to trust us, you can count.

If you are at home in exiftool and scripting, you can do this yourself, and then you should. If you are not, what is missing is not patience but tools. We charge 99 kr in Swedish kronor, once, for the whole archive, however many Memories it holds.

And then into the gallery on your phone

It is the most common question after buying. You download your finished archive, unpack it, select everything at once and save. The pictures settle in among your other photos on the right date, not one at a time.
