How large an archive can I upload?

There is no size limit from our side. What decides in practice is how fast your connection uploads the files.

We set no limit. Archives of several tens of gigabytes are completely normal and are handled without trouble. That is the size the service is built for, and it is the size most people turn out to have once they check.

What decides in practice is your connection. A 30 GB archive over a typical home connection takes a few hours to send; over fibre it is considerably less than that. The upload is almost always the slowest part of the whole process.

The upload is split into chunks and can be resumed. If you lose the network or close the lid of your laptop, it carries on where it left off rather than starting over. Otherwise large archives would be impossible to upload in practice.

If your export arrived in several ZIP parts, hand over all of them at once. We treat them as one continuous archive, which is necessary for the dates and locations to find the right file: that information sits in only one of the parts.

Two practical tips for large archives: use a network cable if you can, since wifi often halves the upload speed, and start the upload when the computer is going to be on for a while anyway. You do not have to sit and watch it. We email you when the archive is ready.

Think about your own disk space too. The finished archive is roughly the same size as the export, so you need room for both when you download it.
